June 2008

Headline (SCBC Headquarters) - Our mailbox is stuffed, but keep send those books for the African American self published author awards and the mainstream author of the year coming!  As always, you can review our rules for award submission.

Summer 2008 is upon us and libraries across the U.S. start their annual summer reading programs.  This year, if your child or other children you know participate, encourage them to pick up a book authored by an African American.  There are books written for various ages by new and veteran African American authors.

And if you know a teen, encourage them to pick up a teen series novel this summer written by an African American.

Enjoy summer reading and the adventure a book brings!

The Lit Spot

What would Nina Simone do? That’s the question 25-year-old Shay Dixon asks of her de facto spiritual adviser, the late great High Priestess of Soul, when she finds herself depressed, evicted from her apartment, and about to flunk out of grad school.

Author Carleen Brice’s debut novel, Orange Mint and Honey, is an Essence “Recommended Read” and a Target “Bookmarked Breakout Book.”  The seasoned Denver writer has also written for various publications including Mademoiselle, the Chicago Tribune, the Denver Post and BET.com.

The SCBC is happy to have Ms. Brice as our June List Spot author!
