Author, Sharel Love, gives readers a view of her Christian fiction writing...

-The SCBC, Inc.

Q: How did you decide to write Christian titles (fiction, non-fiction, etc.)?

A: After writing for years about romance, I submitted my life to Christ and began living for Him and realized I didn't know all that much about romance. But I do understand the struggle of being a Christian and found that I love to write about it in the genre of fiction.

Q: Do you feel that Christian books, overall, are experiencing a “rebirth”?

A: Yes I do! Especially fiction.

Q: Do you study a special Bible passage prior to writing a book?

A: Most times, yes. The scripture helps me to write with understanding and allows me to write in a way that others will understand as well.

Q: Are there Christian themes or Christian issues you want to address through writing?

A: Yes, Christian issues. Christians are always viewed as being perfect, so when something bad happens to them, or they end up in abusive marriages, have children on drugs, etc., someone from the outside looking in will think that it shouldn't be. But Christians go through the same 'issues' as anyone else.

Q: When did you first consider yourself a writer? A Christian writer?

A: I considered myself a writer at the age of 6 when I penned numerous poems for my parents. I didn't come into the realization that I was a Christian writer until 1992 when I saw the need to address sex among our teens and young adults.

Q: What inspired you to pen your first novel?

A: My debut novel started out as a play for church to address AIDS in 1992. Needless to say, because of the nature of the play, we were not allowed to put on that production. But as the years went by, and I ended up losing my best friend to the disease, I was compelled to continue writing until the play became the book that it is, addressing other issues that teens are faced with today.

Q: How did you come up with the title for your book(s)?

A: My publisher and I talked about the content and the message of the book and came to the conclusion that my readers will ask themselves what decision they will make "When He (God) Calls" them to live for Him. What will it take for them to say 'yes' to the call He has on their lives.

Q: Who or what has influenced your writing, and in what way?

A: I have always been fascinated by books, even before I could read. The desire to write to help others has been my main influence, but also to share what I've learned.

Q: How much of the novel is realistic? Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your life?

A: Once I went back and read what was written when the book was near completion, I saw myself in at least three of the characters at some point in my life. The experiences as well, and especially a scene that became prophetic in my life.

Q: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

A: My novel is about learning to hear and heed to the voice of God, but most importantly realizing that we can sometimes make choices in our lives that will have serious repercussions... even to the point of death.
